Plymouth is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The town used to be the capital of Plymouth Colony until 1691 when Plymouth Colony merged with Massachusetts Bay Colony. Pilgrims who sought religious toleration founded Plymouth town in 1620. Plimouth and Plimoth are the historical names of the town until John Smith, an English explorer, gave the town a new name.
During the 19th century, Plymouth was famous for rope making, shipping, and fishing. The largest rope-making company was even established within the town. Although Plymouth’s commercial activities have changed over the years, the town is still an active port.
Tourism is the primary industry in Plymouth today. Plymouth is the home to the oldest museum still in operation in the United States. The museum is one feature that attracts tourists to the town, though it is not the only thing tourists come to see. Plymouth long beaches, Myles Standish State Forest, expansive ocean views, and several other features within the town also attract tourists.
The town is easily habitable for both wealthy individuals and average income earners. Plots of land are inexpensive in Plymouth, and tax rates are also meager compared to many towns in its category.
