Checklist for moving into a new home

Guess what is one of the top three causes of stress? Yes, you got it – moving to a new house! Luckily, we are a reputable and professional moving company who can eliminate all the potential problems when organizing a local move. Packing up all your possessions, the kids’ bedrooms and toys, the skis, the camping equipment, and everything else you possess is no easy task! In fact, it is a huge undertaking! One that we will gladly assist you with: methodically and efficiently. Remember it is not just moving all your belongings, it is sorting out all the extra things: water, electricity, food in the fridge, transport for the animals, keys and remote controls, and so on. And do not forget the paperwork and keeping in contact with the actual movers. Read our moving tips – you will soon be on the right track and feel more organized.

  1. Things to do at the ‘old’ house – 8 weeks to go:
  • The first thing is to get quotes from a reputable “best moving company”, someone like Isaac’s Moving and Storage for example.
  • If you are moving from rented accommodation to your own house, you need to notify your landlord.
  • If your kids need to change schools, get their records and reports collected and ready to go to the new school.
  • Start sorting out all your cupboards and drawers – things you are taking and things you can throw out.
  1. Utilities – 6 weeks to go:
  • Organize your insurance for the new house and check if it covers your move.
  • Collect boxes and packages from your local moving company.
  • Organize a garage sale if you have items to get rid of.
  • Statr making a list of all the accounts you receive in the mail and change the address and details: things like credit cards, insurance, car license, social security, and voter registration.
  1. Personal Effects – 4 weeks to go:
  • Make sure all your belongings will fit through the front door of the new place.
  • Start measuring for curtains.
  • Slowly start packing things you do not use every day. Label the boxes as soon as they are full – try to be methodical. If your moving company is doing the packing, that’s great – less of a headache for you.
  • Get your medical records transferred.
  • Organize a day off work for moving day.
  1. Extra’s – 2 weeks to go:
  • Sort out transport for all the pets.
  • Get all the items you have lent to people returned.
  • Collect all the brochures for the appliances that are staying in the house.
  • Notify your water provider, your electricity company, the gas people, your internet provider, and your cable TV company.
  1. Countdown – 1 week to go:
  • Start consuming all the food in your fridge and cupboards that you do not want to take with you.
  • Get suitcases packed.
  • Organize an overnight bag for the first night in your new home.
  • Start spring cleaning the house.
  • Call your local moving company to confirm all details.
  • Get your mail forwarded to your new address.
  1. Moving Day:
  • Have the house keys at hand to leave in a good place for the new tenants.
  • Bid farewell to neighbors – at your discretion.
  • Organize tips for the movers. Give them a list of everything they are moving. And have your own checklist to tick off as the day goes on.
  1. Do not Forget: Most people are so focused on moving out of their old home that they forget to organize gas, water, and electricity for the new house. You do not want that to happen, especially if it is a Friday!

And most of all, we wish you a safe and happy move and a wonderful life in your new home! Thank you for using Isaac’s Moving and Storage – the best moving choice in cities around New England, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
